Seogyeseowon Confucian Academy was built in 1781 by local Confucian scholars to honor Ocheon Yi Mun-hwa, who served as Daejehak during the reign of King Taejong of Joseon.
It is named for its location on the west side of Donghwacheon Stream, and its plaque was written by Yun Yong-gu, a master calligrapher of the late Joseon period. In 1801, Yi Ju, a righteous army leader in the Imjin War, was enshrined there as well. The grounds include the lecture hall Hwasujeong, rebuilt in 1924, the east hall Geumsurang, the west hall Huiridang, and the shrine Sungdeoksa. It is open at all times, and admission and parking are free.
