Construction began in 1997 and finished in 2001 so that international and national events such as the 2002 Korea–Japan World Cup could be held. Around the main stadium, which can host both soccer and track and field events, are a ssireum (Korean wrestling) arena, a lawn bowls field, a rock climbing wall, and a sub-stadium. Inside the stadium is a virtual sports experience hall. The roof is modeled on the Earth and carries the curve of a traditional folk house roof.
