Maeyangseowon Confucian Academy was built in 1705 to honor Song Won-gi (1548–1615), and his descendants, the father and son Song Myeong-gi and Song I-seok, were later enshrined with him.
After it was torn down in 1868 under the order to abolish Confucian academies, it was rebuilt and burned down repeatedly, and it was restored in 2006. The lecture hall Guindang stands inside the main gate Yangjeongmun. To its northeast, the shrine Sanghyeonsa sits separately on a raised platform, in a side-by-side layout. It is always open, and viewing and parking are free.
