It began in the mid-1990s as makchang restaurants opened one by one near the north gate of Gyeongbuk University, and it grew in the mid-2000s. At one time there were more than 30 makchang restaurants alone, but now many shops also serve other dishes such as grilled shellfish and chicken. The alley is always open, but you cannot park there.
